Smartest Solutions 2020 - 2030As part of the Bow Smart Mobility Partnership...A SkyTran or similar automated people mover (APM) will be built from Calgary through the Bow Corridor to complete the Regional Mobility Strategy, accommodating visitors and minimizing both financial costs and ecological impacts.
Twenty to thirty years from now, a flexible, inexpensive transit system like the SkyTran could be a feasible option for moving people to and within the Bow Corridor in an expeditious and environmentally friendly way. The SkyTran system is expected to require minimal infrastructure and to be cheaper than building and maintaining roadways or light rail transit. Ideally, the system would be installed in the median between existing lanes of the TransCanada Highway, using upright standards similar to lamp posts. This configuration would optimize utilization of the existing infrastructure.
The SkyTran system is a high-speed, lightweight, suspended MAGLEV system incorporating small (1 to 4) passenger vehicles.Any number of vehicles can be added to the system, providing a high degree of flexibility. Co-engineered by the Dean of Engineering at the University of Montana, Missoula, this type of above-grade transportation system is forecast to carry more people and cause less impact to the surrounding environment than roads or rail. According to its proponents, the SkyTran is currently being considered for implementation in several regions worldwide.
