Introduction

Parks Canada, the Towns of Canmore and Banff and the Municipal District of Bighorn commissioned a regional transportation study in May 2003 to develop a regional transportation strategy for the Bow Corridor.

The study involved an extensive research effort that included stakeholder forums, interviews, focus groups, public open houses, literature and document reviews, and an examination of relevant experience elsewhere. The project involved four steps – Issues Scan, Situation Analysis, Best Practices and the Strategy itself.

The proposed Bow Corridor Regional Mobility Strategy will

expedite the movement of more people and more animals in and through the Corridor;

take action to meet demand as needed over time; and

adopt simple solutions that link together within a long-term, regional framework;

but only if everyone becomes part of the solution. A Bow Smart Mobility Partnership , involving governments, the private sector and non-governmental organizations, will be the Strategy's key to success. In all, 44 Strategic Elements have been designed to respond to the mobility needs of both people and animals over the next 5, 15 and 25 years. When coordinated through the Partnership, they will make an enduring and positive contribution to the exceptional quality of life and visitor experience that have made the Bow Corridor a world-class environment and a draw for humans and wildlife alike.
