Coordinate Traihead Parking

As part of the Bow Smart Mobility Partnership...

the MDs of Bighorn and Kananaskis and the Bow Valley Provincial Park will manage trailhead parking east of Canmore and feed information into a variable messaging system with displays strategically located along the TransCanada Highway.

In order to address the current safety and parking management issues generated by ‘informal' parking at locations along the TransCanada Highway (e.g., Heart Mountain), and to encourage use of other modes, trailhead parking lots with gates and automatic counters will be established at busy locations (Grassi Lakes and Heart Mountain, for example). A modest user fee will be established for the lots to cover maintenance and administration (including enforcement) costs. A similar system is in effect in the US at Acadia National Park in Maine.
