Real-Time Information
East of Hwy 22
Smart Solutions 2004 - 2010
will implement systems offering real-time and pre-trip information for visitors, residents and through traffic through the use of VMS and the Internet.
Information exchange will include both VMS
(Variable Message Sign) applications and the provision of “real-time” information through other means such as the Internet (particularly with the increasing popularity of mobile access to the Internet). Such systems will allow for both pre-trip planning and adjustments to trips en route. The types of information provided can include:
weather and road condition data, including information on delays (e.g., due to a collision) and alternative routes where applicable
construction activities
congestion levels at key attractions
parking availability at key attractions
closures due to weather or animal activity
availability of alternative modes of transportation
user fee information by time of day
Only limited amounts of information can be provided on overhead or roadside signs, to avoid diverting a driver's attention away from the road for too long. Larger quantities of data can be conveyed to visitors at information centres located at mobility centres.
Feedback on this approach by stakeholders was generally positive. A variety of real-time information systems are in use around the world and have proven to be effective in helping travelers make informed decisions about travel in a national park setting (e.g., Acadia National Park in Maine).
